Welcome to Kells County Regulators
The Cowboy Action division of
Kells Rifle and Pistol Club
Introduction
Cowboy Action Shooting evolved back in the 80's with a group of Practical Pistol shooters in the USA, who had become disgruntled with the PP scene, which was getting more and more out of control. What with laser sights, race guns, slicker this and go faster that. [A bit like here! - Webmaster] So this group of shooters decided to go for something that they considered would be more fun and not so frenetic, something that did away with the gadget race for competitive advantage. They decided to go back to their frontier shooting roots, thus Cowboy Action Shooting was born.
Three firearms are used, revolver,
lever-action rifle and shotgun, but they need to be replicas of firearms in use
before 1900. It's a cross between Practical Pistol, Saturday morning at the 'flicks',
and amateur dramatics. Oh yes, I nearly forgot to mention that you get to dress up
in the clothes of that era and take an appropriate name.
Each competitor, properly suited, booted and armed, is ready to have some fun. A typical stage would involve something of the following. To indicate to the Range Officer that they are ready, the shooter may be required to say something, for example, "You're not stealing my horses!". The RO would then start the timer and the shooter would engage various steel targets with five shots from the revolver, ten shots from the rifle and four shots from the shotgun. Targets are generously proportioned at 10" to 16" square and set at 7 to 12 yards for revolver and shotgun, and a bit further for the rifle shots - up to 25 yards.
Scoring is easy, it is simply the time taken to shoot the required targets plus
time penalties for misses and procedural errors. Misses are easy to count as all
the targets are metal and clang when struck by a bullet. Procedural errors include
shooting targets in the wrong order, from the wrong place or with the wrong firearm.
Shooters are required to enter into the 'spirit of the game'. It is a FUN competition,
so the more you become a turn-of-the-century character the better. The only thing more
important than having a good time is doing it safely!
If you fancy becoming your childhood cowboy / cowgirl hero this could the perfect opportunity.
Happy trails
