Kells County Regulators

August 2005

Greetings my little companeros.

Desperadoes from across the county descended on Kells county to participate in the much vaunted Cowboy Action Shoot at the M bar M spread. They came from all over, Strabane, Belfast, and the north Antrim coast, even south of the border down Wexford way. People from other clubs had heard of this unique experience and had to come to see what all the fuss was about, as it turned out they were not disappointed.

It was a fun filled day, which was held in six stages, added to this it all took place in glorious sunshine. A group of club members had invested a substantial amount of dinero in brand new metal targets. This proved to be an absolute boon. So its no more "forward score and patch". With the advent of the new metal targets competitors did not have to wait long between stages.

A rye smile was brought to everyone's lips, as each would be gunslinger sat astride a mock wooden horse named Buttercup. Alternating between pistol, lever action rifle, and shotgun, they aimed to combat those mean and moody metal targets. This ain't easy if your knees are not as young as they used to be. The new Sheriff in town by the name of Grizzly Adams plus his stalwart deputies including the likes of Cold Steel and the General, had much to contend with, keeping the peace and making sure the shoot ran according to plan.

As chow time approached the chuckwagon arrived in the form of a barbecue. Wishbone the cook dispensed such cowboy delicacies as hamburgers, sausages, in baps and rolls plus tea and coffee, once this repast was over it was back to taming the old west.

Now for my fashion conscious readers many of the competitors were attired in the genre of yesteryear that's the late 1800's to you and me. My informers had told me that the owner of the M bar M spread was to appear in a little number in denim yes gang a hillbilly, it didn't happen. However glancing around the cowboy catwalk I spied an array of stetsons and high stepping cowboy boots, plus bandannas and buckskin fringes everyone getting into the spirit of the event.

At the end of the day as the sun sunk slowly into the golden west, weary but fulfilled caballeros wended their way home.

Till we meet again amigos, Happy trails

The Tombstone Kid.
